MUA-turned-entrepreneur Aimee Connolly’s approach to beauty is simple: it should be fun and accentuate what you already have. Her new-to-ASOS brand, Sculpted By Aimee, helps you do just that with its luminous products and soft-glam staples. And with summer nearing, we wanted to find out how to elevate our own base routines, so we spoke to Aimee about it all. From deciding what products, techniques and skincare regimens *actually* deliver to the formula to achieving a flashback-free base, scroll to learn it all.
'Makeup should always feel like an extension of your skin – enhancing, never masking... have fun with it!'
Hey Aimee! As an MUA, what tips do you have for improving the application and final look of products?
If you ever feel like your makeup isn’t sitting quite right, it’s usually down to your prep. Starting with a cleanser ensures your skin is free from excess oil, an essence or toner deeply hydrates and preps the skin, and serum is amazing for locking in moisture and giving a plump, radiant base. When your skincare is right, your makeup melts into the skin beautifully. Finishing with the Beauty Base primer not only hydrates but also provides SPF protection and the perfect grip for foundation.
I’m in a rush and need a quick beat. Give me a 10-minute foolproof routine for glowy, everyday makeup.
If I only had 10 minutes, this would be my go-to routine: Beauty Base to hydrate, prime and add glow, Hydra Tint for a fresh, lightweight base that evens out the skin, Brighten Up Concealer under the eyes, and [blush] for a natural flush. Then sweep through brows with Easy Brow for a quick tidy-up and add MyMascara for instant length. Finish with Hydralip for a gorgeous, effortless lip in seconds. Super quick, super glowy, and perfect for every day!
Underpainting was trending on social media a few months back – what’s the best order for applying base products?
Underpainting is such a great way to add natural depth and dimension. I’d start with Liquid Lights Bronzer, blending it where you want warmth and definition: cheekbones, temples, and jawline. To brighten, the Brighten Up Concealer works beautifully under the eyes and on the high points of the face. Once that’s all in place, go in with your foundation or base product to bring everything together seamlessly. This technique softens and blends everything, giving a sculpted yet natural look.
With sponges, brushes and even fingers on the market, set the record straight – what’s the best way to apply foundation?
The right tool makes all the difference! A damp beauty sponge is great for pressing foundation into the skin if you prefer a dewier look, but a brush gives you that flawless, airbrushed effect. For the best finish, start with a small amount of product and use a buffing motion to blend it into the skin. You can build up coverage where needed, but starting light ensures everything looks natural and fresh.
What’s your advice for people with textured skin who want to achieve a smoother base?
Focusing on skincare first makes a huge difference. Cleansing removes any buildup, while... a serum works to refine the skin’s texture over time, and eye cream helps to hydrate and smooth any fine lines around the eyes. To lock everything in, [use a] lightweight moisturiser that preps the skin without feeling heavy.

Summer’s on the horizon, so let’s talk more about Hydra Tint. How can we adapt our makeup to the heat using this tinted serum?
With warmer weather, it’s all about lighter, breathable products that keep your skin fresh and protected. Hydra Tint is a must-have because it’s lightweight, hydrating and gives SPF 20 protection while evening out the skin for a natural, radiant finish. If you want a little extra glow, layering Beauty Base underneath will give you that gorgeous luminous look while keeping your skin hydrated and protected with SPF 30. Less is more in summer – fresh, natural and effortless!

How do we maximise a glow-from-within look with your makeup products?
To really make the high points pop, highlighter is a must. Apply it to the cheekbones, brow bones, the bridge of the nose, and the cupid’s bow to catch the light in all the right places. The key is to use light, hydrating layers that blend seamlessly into the skin rather than sitting on top. And for that final fresh, healthy glow, a spritz of the
Hydrate & Hold Setting Mist
keeps everything dewy and radiant all day long!
