STYLING
EVERYONE'S BEEN WEARING THESE AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
By Ayis Stephen-Diver, 10 September 2024
As the iron grip of y2k loosens, early 2010s fashion trends like supersized bags and boots of every style have stepped back into the limelight, partly fueled by The Row's Margaux and Gucci's new take on the riding boot. Naturally, these trends have swept through the guestlists at New York Fashion Week, with the usual street-style suspects sporting everything from Coach Brooklyn bags to Tommy Hilfiger classic black knee-highs. Here's how you can hop on the hype.

WHY BOOTS ARE TRENDING
After a summer of sling-back kitten heels and ballet flats, the new season calls for boots. Every autumn we see a few standout silhouettes, and this is the era of slouchier styles and knee-highs. Dressing for AW24 is all about luxe fabrications, so finishes like croc-embossed leather and brown suede have been taking centre stage.
HOW WE'D STYLE THEM
When it comes to finding inspo, we're looking to the 2010s. Think old-school Kim Kardashian-esque skinny jeans or black leather leggings, teamed with black knee-high boots and a slouchy off-shoulder tee for some Rick Owens edge. If you want to channel your inner NYC cool girl, reach for some autumnal-brown boots with a dark denim co-ord or dress.

WHY SUPERSIZED BAGS ARE TRENDING
If the sound of bangle stacks hasn't already clued you in, fashion is moving from quiet luxury minimalism to unabridged maximalism. This shift has recently been led by brands like Loewe and Balenciaga, who have inflated everything from heels to bags into can't-miss accessories. Plus, it’s September, you can stash everything from your gym essentials to your uni laptop into one of these bags and *still* have space to spare.
HOW WE'D STYLE THEM
Lean into maximalist territory and go BIG. Key pieces to style your bag with: thick wool overcoats, the baggiest jeans you can find and puffball skirts or dresses for extra volume. For a more focused approach, you can draw attention to the bag by taking cues from Hailey Bieber – she’s a master at styling minimal basics to highlight her accessories.
