TREND UNCOVERED: HOW TO STYLE Y3K LOOKS

If Y2K is 2000s styling inspiration, Y3K is what we're all guessing we'll be wearing when the year 3000 rolls around. Taking cues from sci-fi-inspired pop culture, Pinterest is reporting a +6030% increase in searches for 'Y3K outfits' in its Summer 2024 Trend Report. It’s also heavily influenced by society's fascination with the near future; AI's increasing influence, the rise of immersive digital universes, and leaps forward in both virtual reality and video game technology. The vibe is futuristic, high shine and metallic details. You can see the most literal examples in Bey's Renaissance looks and Zendaya's iconic outfit by Thierry Mugler. Both are otherworldly, striking and a little robotic. However, if super-wide-brim hats, visors and full-body armour are a little much, we've got some more... wearable options below.

If Bey and Zendaya haven't convinced you, silver is the hero hue of this aesthetic. However, branching out into other space-age shades is also a surefire way to add a touch of Y3K clout to your everyday outfits. You can even go full-on metallic in matching skirts, jeans, tops and sneakers (thank you Nike). Oh, and don’t forget a matching accessory like a clutch bag to top it off.

Alongside all the shiny shades, graphics play a big part in the overall Y3K aesthetic. Designs come warped and twisted, generally out of focus, or manipulated in some way. Y3K's rise in popularity has been linked to AI and its creative usage, often depicting futuristic images that are far from perfect. It's no surprise that part of this aesthetic follows this design trait.

Anything shimmering and metallic (that looks a little alien-esque) is perfect for foundations, eyeshadows and eyeliner. Experiment with the latter, the bolder and more elaborate the design, the better. Hair accessories like braids, beads, clips and pins are the hallmark of this style too, and as for nails, 3D details, neon hues and matching metallic accents are the way to go.
