OCCASIONWEAR: HERE'S HOW OUR ASOS MODELS BREAK THE DRESS CODE

Occasionwear dressing can sometimes follow the same traditional formula: dress + heels = the look. But this season, we're all about breaking the dress code. That all-eyes-on-me bedazzled dress? Wear it to a BBQ. Your favourite puffball gown? Pair it with trainers or ballet pumps. As professional models, Doella and Hayley have been lucky enough to wear some of the glitziest occasion dresses. That's why we had to catch up with them on the set of our occasionwear shoot. Scroll for the scoop!

What was your first memory of getting dressed up?
I was around five years old at my cousin's christening. I’ve got a cute picture of my ‘fit, it was cream with flowers.

Stick to a dress code or break the rules?
Stick to the dress code. I like to be very authentic and I LOVE a theme, or to match the surroundings. For example, if I'm going to the park I might dress more earthy, or if I’m headlining a gig at a jazz bar [editor's note: Doella is a v talented singer] I'd go real sexy.

So, you must have to dress up a lot. What's your like gig vibe?
Like I said, I like to match the venue. I played at Sofar Sounds in Brighton, and it was very natural and free, so I did a lot of green. I wore a skirt as a dress that had some leaves on it – I felt like an earthy goddess Princess fairy.

Do you have any going-out essentials?
All my rings. I went to a gig last week and left my bag full of all my rings, but it was actually OK because then I got to go on another ring binge. It's the cycle of life: you get a four-ring set, lose them, and then you grieve and find new ones that you love even more.

Do you have like a go-to makeup look for dressy events?
I'm quite minimalist, so if I'm going out, I just want to look slightly more enhanced. I like looking healthy: glowy skin and a blushy look. Sometimes I'll stick on some lashes too.

Is there anyone that you look to for inspo?
Green Tea Peng – I just love her. She's just very authentic London.

What’s on your occasionwear wishlist?
My brother's getting married in New Zealand soon and I'm singing my sister-in-law down the aisle. But, I haven't got a dress yet...

Did you go to prom?
Yeah, it was kind of iconic because I graduated in 2020. So that's something... We had hosted at my friend's and I did my BFs makeup (she didn't know how to do makeup), but we got glam in a hotel. I remember I thought it was such a cute look [laughs]. I thought it slayed at the time, but it did not. I had these silly Dutch braids rolled into buns, winged eyeliner, a choker, and an emerald green dress with flowers. I love green.

If you could do it all again now, what would you wear?
I would probably wear a pantsuit or something a little bit more fashion-forward.

Break the dress code or stick to the rules?
Break it – I wear whatever I want. It could be dressing like a cowgirl one day, dressing in streetwear the next, or anything sophisticated and classy.

What’s in your going-out bag?
Always lip liner. Any sort of lipstick or lip gloss that I have and hand cream because my hands are so dry. Also, rubbing alcohol. I don't know why, but I'm like a disinfectant freak. If I'm at a restaurant and if they haven't cleaned the tables properly, I spray it down. Gloves as well – my hands get really cold – and AirPods at all times.

Advice for dressing up?
Stick to something that's timeless – less is more.

Best party you've ever been to?
There are SO many, but one of my friends in New York, he’s Nigerian and his culture is centred on family and friends, so his passion is to bring people together. He throws these extravagant parties. The best was New Year's Eve, it was just hip-hop music and Afrobeats... it was just the best time!
