THE MAKING OF AN *UNREAL* SHOOT

First things first - why ‘Bedroom’?
Amir: We used to always work out of Soren’s bedroom...
Soren: ...It was our HQ! We'd do all-nighters there, editing, coming up with ideas. So when we were thinking of a duo name, we thought we’d stick to the roots.
Where did you meet each other?
A: We met each other in Year 8 in high school, when we were 13.
S: I made films, and I found out he made films as well…
A: …and we were like, let’s both make films! We did a gap year doing every little job possible, and we slowly transitioned into doing music videos during uni.

‘I loved this idea of using the oversized props – watching it on the screen, it just feels like you’re looking into a different universe.’
– Soren Harrison
What’s been the most exciting part of the Unreal Finds set to work with?
A: The scale of it – we’ve definitely created a ‘world’. When you step onto the stage you feel like you’re immersed in a new universe. There’s a lot of colour and exuberance and creativity… We used a LED screen instead of a green screen, so you can actually see it and be in it.
S: I loved this idea of using oversized props – when you see the talent walking around, they look like little dolls.
Nice! What tricks did you use to create our ASOS dreamland?
A: Instead of doing everything in post-production, we thought, how can we have fun with in-camera tricks? We've made it feel like you’re constantly moving, being sucked into new environments.

How did you blend the fashion into the Unreal Finds concept? Did the fashion inspire you?
A: The fashion inspired me a lot – the dresses, the long trousers, the bagginess, the long legs; I’ve been shooting on a wider lens to enhance this.
S: The clothes inform the light and the mood – they make you feel like you’re not in a dark studio, you’re really there. They're the last piece of the puzzle – lots of interesting colours, tones and layering. We loved the women’s dresses.
Those dresses on the steps really banged!
A: Yeah, it was like a catwalk moment!
What was it like bringing in the talent once the set was built?
S: That’s when it really came to life.
A: It was really nice to see the talent see the set for the first time, they were so excited to play around in it. When Ants came to set, he looked like he was in a massive playhouse, interacting with all the different things. That was cool.

Do you have any trademarks across your work, and how have you blended them in here?
S: The use of colour and vibrancy, and also the crew – we’ve known some of them since we were 16.
A: We love using wide-angle lenses, too – it warps the whole set and makes it feel like it goes on forever.
What have you found out about each other on the project?
A: Soren can’t eat oysters before a shoot! He's always pushing it, too – it’s nice to see how far you can take things when you’re shooting.
At least Amir can cover you if you ever get sick…
S: Yeah, we can tap each other in and out!
