By Ezra Maloney, 20 March 2023
It’s ⏰ for another entry in everyone’s fave series: ✨Stylist Spotlight✨ AKA our chance to get to know an amaze fashion expert and host a live styling session on Insta and TikTok – plus, we sit down with them to learn more about their career and the trends they’re loving atm! This month, we chatted to – *drumroll pls* – Ellis Ranson (@ellisransonx)! Keep reading for our interview with Ellis and check out a few of the ASOS LUXE 'fits she styled on set!🔻

ASOS: Hey, Ellis! Can you tell us a bit about what you do?
ELLIS: I’m a celebrity and fashion stylist, so I work with a mixture of fashion brands and magazines! I also do some celebrity dressing for their wardrobes, red carpets, and TV appearances – so a lot of making people look good! And I’ve just started to dip my toe into the influencing world, too...
ASOS: When did you start that?
ELLIS: I started in lockdown, because every shoot got cancelled, and I felt like I needed to get up and do something. It started with videos on how to dress in lockdown, how to clear out your wardrobe, DIY tie-dye and it just grew from there!
ASOS: How did you get into styling?
ELLIS: I knew I wanted to do fashion, but I wasn’t sure how at first. Then I got a random modelling job for a local brand, and I realised on the first day – because they didn’t have a stylist and I was putting all the outfits together – that styling was actually really cool and maybe I could do this. An accidental kinda thing, but the best accident ever!
ASOS: Incred! So what's been a career highlight since you started out?
ELLIS: Being here today is a bit of a pinch me moment, because when I first went freelance, I styled here in the studios for a bit, and to be back on Instagram doing Stylist Spotlight is just crazy! My first ever red carpet was a highlight, too – I was a bit like, ‘oh my god, what am I doing here? How am I allowed to be doing this?’!

ASOS: What was your first ever red-carpet experience?
ELLIS: It was the NTAs [the National Television Awards] with Ferne McCann! There’s actually video proof I was there, because I was on the carpet sorting my client’s dress, and then I turned around and walked into someone who was getting her photo taken! I’ve definitely come a long way since then!
ASOS: We bet it's wayyy different now!
ELLIS: 100%! I think one of my best moments recently was styling Megan McKenna for the O2, and I got to go and watch it. I was like, ‘This is crazy, I’m watching someone I’ve styled perform onstage at the O2'! Another amazing one was styling Kate and Rio [Ferdinand] for the BRITS. It was my first ever BRITs client, so that was fun.
ASOS: What are you working on at the minute?
ELLIS: So many random jobs. That’s what I love about it – the variety. This week I’m here, then tomorrow I’ve got two fittings for a TV show, then a fitting with Kate Ferdinand and next week I’m styling a Pets At Home campaign! And last week I did a shoot for Pepsi!
ASOS: Hope you get to meet the pets! And who would you love to work with in future?
ELLIS: I’d love to style Mabel or Raye because they’re both at the beginning of their careers, and they seem like they’re up for pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion, so you can be really creative.
ASOS: Now that summer’s coming, what are your biggest trend predictions for the season?
ELLIS: Summer black! Which I love, because so many people feel comfortable in that colour. It’s not a go-to colour for me normally, but I’m definitely trying it out this year. Oh and I love all the new romantic looks, and the ombré dressing we’ve seen on the shoot today. And cowboy boots of course – you can style them with anything!
ASOS: So, speaking of the shoot, what were your favourite bits from today?
ELLIS: I think the ombré dress I’ve styled Rhi in today is so cute – perfect for festivals or summer holidays. It’s an all-rounder and you can dress it up with some silver jewellery and a heel, or keep it casj with some cowboy boots 🤠

ASOS: Yesss, we ❤️🔥 a cowboy boot! So, what’s the best part of your job?
ELLIS: Meeting and working with different people every day. I love teaching people how to dress and how to feel good. Plus – say you've worked for a client, especially a celebrity client, and you've worked with them for a few years – you start to see them really understanding their own body and their own style, and really starting to love fashion! Watching people discover their personal style is the best. You could give lots of people the same jacket and they’d all style it differently – it’s all about the details, and I love noticing that!
