BEAUTY
LIP LOOKS FROM A MAC MUA
By Alice Doleman, 1 May 2022
Sometimes you can get stuck in a bit of a lipstick/liner rut. And we don’t blame you – you know what works and you have your fave products. But if you feel like you need a makeup shake up, we've brought in MAC MUA, Alexis, to get us thinking outside of the beauty box (or the lip line, in this case). Scroll down to check out four stunning lip looks – perf for the Bank Hol – some experimental, some trending and some classic OGs. Plus, it helps that she had MAC's iconic lipstick/liner duos to play with, too 🔥

OVERLINED LIPS

If you’re all about old-school everyday glam, this is the look for you. It’s easy to do before you head out for the day, and it's also incredibly handy for creating fuller-looking lips, if that’s your vibe. According to Alexis, the first step is finding the perf MAC liner, a few shades darker than your normal neutral liner shade. This darker colour helps create the appearance of shadow, which – you guessed it – makes those lips look fuller.
Go beyond the lip line when applying the liner and shade in the outer corners for a vampier, poutier finish. Then grab a lighter lipstick and apply it primarily to the center of your lips. This catches the eye (and the light). Easy peasy, huh?

THE COOL CUPID’S BOW
Alexis using the MAC Lip Pencil in ‘Brick’, £17, and the MAC Lipstick in ‘Lady Danger’, £18.50
We looooove an exaggerated cupid’s bow, especially with a red lip. Talk about makeup that demands attention. Alexis used the ‘Brick’ lip pencil to line her top lip, going against the natural curve by drawing a straight line from the corner of her mouth to the top of her cupid’s bow.
She then exaggerated and defined her cupid’s bow by drawing a V shape in the centre of her top lip, and finished by drawing her bottom lip as per usual – remember, symmetry is crucial. To add a lil drama, she grabbed the ‘Lady Danger’ lipstick to fill in the lips and blend out the line.

THE CLEAN LIP
Alexis using the MAC Lip Pencil in ‘Beet’, £17, and the MAC Liquid Lipstick in ‘Hey There, Good Looking’, £19.50
A bold lip can be scary to take on. You're going for a nice clean line where the lipstick stops and your skin begins, but lipstick often has other plans and runs (technical term: feathers) into your skin. Thankfully, with Alexis’ tips, we're here to help!
Ok, this first step might feel odd, BUT Alexis started with the lipstick first, applying it evenly across her lips (starting from the centre). Then – and this is the genius step – she went back in with a liner to create a sharp and tidy line around the lipstick. It's feathering-free magic!

STAR-STUDDED
Alexis using the MAC Lip Pencil in ‘Beet’, £17, and the MAC Liquid Lipstick in ‘Hey There, Good Looking’, £19.50
If you follow Alexis on IG, you’ll see she’s constantly coming up with uber-creative lip looks. She’s defs taking us out of our comfort zone with this one, but we're here for it! Perfect for your next bathroom photo shoot (IYKYK), this starry look would look right at home in the next Doja or Charlie XCX music video.
Start out with a freshly sharpened pencil (and a steady hand!) and begin drawing the outlines of stars across your lips in varying sizes and placements with the 'Beet' lip pencil. You could even draw them beyond your lip line. Then, using a fine eyeliner brush (we love the NYX angled liner brush) paint the rest of the lip with liquid lipstick, leaving the stars blank. To finish, tidy up the stars with the liner brush and get posing for the 'gram!
