CONVERSE CHUCK 70S

While the Chuck Taylor All Star has been a mainstay in Converse’s line-up for a century now, the shoe on today's shelves is a far cry from the original ‘Non-Skid’ that started life back in 1917. Sometime in the 70s though, they perfected the blueprint.

This rubber-toed icon of Americana has been tweaked and twisted over the years, with new versions sporting skinnier builds, Flyknit woven uppers or memory foam soles. But there’s no beating a classic. The Chuck Taylor All Star 1970s collection takes things back to the brand’s most important era, and the time this sneaker reached its peak.

Throughout the 70s, Chucks were being donned by pro ballers, pool-shredding skaters and rock stars alike. Embracing its newfound off-court clout, Converse began to colour them up in funkier tones, and suddenly they were everywhere. The Chuck 70s celebrate this seminal moment by revamping the vintage build from way back when, complete with heavier 14oz canvas uppers, a chunkier gloss-white sole, full cotton laces and retro branding. Far out.

We hung out with London-based creative Nayana, who channels her energy into the same areas that the Chuck Taylor has become a symbol for. Among designing and crafting clothes for her label NEYEANA, and writing and producing tunes in search of a music career, she even has time to design and make her own jewellery. Phew... She wears her Chucks with double denim that looks as vintage as the shoes themselves, a 70s-style striped long-sleeved tee and some seriously fire socks (geddit?). For another take, she pairs embroidered Maharishi Snopants with a bold colour-pop trucker jacket.
