LADY GAGA'S SEVENTH ALBUM IS HERE, TAKE A LOOK AT HER STYLE EVOLUTION

No artist can rework their style quite like Lady Gaga. Over the last 20 years, we've seen big bows, a meat dress, platform-pleaser heels, red carpet transformations, music-video serves and more. It's only right that on the release day of her seventh studio album, Mayhem, we look back at some of the pop icon's major looks from over the years. Take a scroll and use Mayhem as your backing track...

THE FAME

Let's throw it back to the summer of 2008. Lady Gaga had platinum-blonde hair, BLUNT bangs and a dream! She had just released her debut album, The Fame, and while it bought us incredible hits like Just Dance and Paparazzi, it cemented Lady Gaga as one to watch in the fashion stakes. This era was big on bold colors, bodysuits, bows, statement sunglasses and OTT makeup (positive). There wasn't anyone at the time doing it big like this, and Lady Gaga had us all locked in.

THE FAME MONSTER/BORN THIS WAY

It's 2010, and by now, Lady Gaga was already known as an eccentric in her music and persona. We'd come to expect huge things from her on and off the carpet, but we weren't expecting a dress made entirely from meat. Lady Gaga's style began to blend art with messaging, resulting in huge viral moments like that time she turned up to the 2011 Grammy Awards in an egg-like vessel or when she dressed up as Jo Calderone, her male alter ego in a nod to Born This Way, at the MTV VMA Awards in the same year.

ARTPOP

Gaga dropped her fourth studio album, ARTPOP, in 2013 and ushered in a version of herself we hadn't seen before. Her style got quirkier with direct links to pieces of famous art. Cue a visit to London in a mini dress plastered with Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and her signature pleaser boots, and Gaga donning a Salvador Dali-inspired 'stache during a listening party in Germany. Her makeup in this era ranged from head-to-toe white paint to bold paint smears across her face.

JOANNE

While the current Western style craze is due to Beyonce's Cowboy Carter album, Lady Gaga had a moment of her own in 2016 with Joanne. Pink suits and matching cowboy hats were her uniform of choice, alongside stripped-back hair and makeup. But in true Lady Gaga fashion, when the occasion called for it, bold wigs and even bolder pleasers were back on the table.

CHROMATICA

In 2020, Lady Gaga's style was partly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of masks, which she used to amplify her Chromatica album looks. Case in point, the MTV VMA Awards. From her arrival on the red carpet, throughout her performance and while picking up her awards, she wore seven masks alongside statement dresses, bodysuits and coats – all given the Lady Gaga treatment.

Method dressing at the London premiere for Joker: Folie à Deux.

MAYHEM

Lady Gaga has arguably always opted for method dressing – as we've seen, she styles herself by way of her album's aesthetics, and she applies that to her acting jobs too. At the Joker: Folie à Deux premiere last year, Gaga's makeup artist Sarah Tanno created a look with blue eyeshadow, a red lip and a crystal studded teardrop – very Harley Quinn-esque. So far for LG7, Mayhem, she's given us Castlecore and jellyfish hair, and we can't wait to see what's next for this era.
