Robert Eggers' 2024 take on the 1922 vampire film Nosferatu, itself a screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, might be the official signpost that medieval is back in the cultural zeitgeist. Although the bulk of the trend draws from the Dark Ages, glimpses of Roman-inspired decadence is scattered throughout in the form of metallic accents, romantic draping and premium fabrics – just look to Rabanne SS24 or Balmain SS22. The OG It-girl of castlecore, Joan of Arc, and her common depiction in chainmail and suits of armor has inspired everything from Alexander McQueen's FW98 collection to Zendaya’s 2018 Met Gala look and most recently, Dior Resort 2025.
