STYLE NOTES FROM THE MET GALA CO-CHAIRS OF 2025

With this year’s Met Gala themed Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, Black dandyism is taking centre stage and highlighting the role fashion has played in shaping Black American identities. Sure, we’ll be refreshing our feeds on the night to see the usual parade of A-listers, but we predict the real sartorial statements will come from co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton and A$AP Rocky. Expect formalwear to be flipped on its head, archival references and tailoring with a twist from these big names. But before the main event, let’s look back at their best style moments that showed us how to nail the dress code.

COLMAN DOMINGO

Colman Domingo has cemented himself as a red carpet MVP – we can thank his impeccable eye for suiting and his stylists Wayman and Micah for that. His approach is theatrical and loaded with references – in an interview with Vanity Fair, he admitted his love for Teddy Pendergrass, 70s Italian cuts and how he likes to look ‘like a big flirt at all times’. This look does just that – the classic tux is swapped for a bedazzled, waist-cinching blazer, a satin turtleneck and straight trousers. Proof that your formal ‘fit doesn’t have to be boring.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS

On the opposite end of the menswear spectrum lies streetwear, which no-one navigates better than Pharrell Williams. Featuring subtly flared trousers (which Kendrick Lamar would approve of) and a matching bomber jacket, his quilted Ernest W. Baker set was a lesson in authenticity and modern formalwear – a perfect ‘fit for music’s biggest night of the year. We’re taking notes from Pharrell’s refusal to compromise on personal style regardless of occasion – just like the trailblazing jazz musicians and Congolese sapeurs of the 40s.

LEWIS HAMILTON

Although F1 star Lewis Hamilton’s out-and-about wardrobe usually consists of big-name streetwear labels and rare trainers, he knows how to switch gears for the red carpet. Wearing bespoke Wales Bonner – and joined by Grace herself – his British Fashion Awards 2023 tailored look was fresh and elegant: a cream knee-length coat and ivory satin trousers. Plus, his brooch choice added the perfect amount of drama – showing us there’s always a way to customise your formal 'fits. If this is any indication of what he’ll bring to the Met Gala, we’re more than ready.

A$AP ROCKY

Fashion Killa A$AP Rocky has held a permanent spot on fashion moodboards for over a decade, so we have no doubt that he’ll deliver. It’s hard to pick, but one of our fave fashion moments was at last year’s British Fashion Awards. He ditched traditional suiting for something more casual: a navy harrington jacket, oversized trousers, square-toe loafers and a red leather tie peeking through. It was 60s-meets-corpcore – a fusion only he can pull off.
