INTERVIEW

THE INSIDE SCOOP ON OUTER BANKS WITH COSTUME DESIGNER EMMIE HOLMES

Outer Banks has blessed us with two things this year: season 4, which is now available on Netflix, and a new collab with Reclaimed Vintage. This just-dropped collection is heavily inspired by the styling on the show and we have Costumer Designer, Emmie Holmes, to thank for that. She’s the mastermind behind the vintage surfer-sleaze 'fits worn by everyone from Rafe to Kiara, and now she's behind the Reclaimed Vintage collaboration too. Scroll to explore her journey into costume design, styling advice for the new season, and everything OBX!

Hey Emmie, let's start from the beginning! What was your journey into costume design?
I had an interest in theatre throughout high school and college, so I worked backstage on many plays. I dug my way onto my first film set during my senior year of college in 2004 and never looked back.

Talk us through your creative process.
It all starts with the script and tapping into the mind of each character. I like to dig into real world inspiration so that the show feels genuine and raw. From there we design, shop, build, screenprint, dye, distress and alter clothing until it has morphed into a world that feels truly our own.

Who's your fave character to design for?
Kiara has been a favourite of mine from day one – she's the alter ego of my younger self.

In the show, the characters are split into two groups – describe the differences in styling between the Kooks and Pogues.
Kook style is crisp, clean and polished enough to meet your grandparents at the country club for lunch – lots of soft summer colours, all year long. Pogue style is throwing on your boyfriend's tee and yesterday's jeans. It's lived in and worn out. For Pogues, we overdye everything or strip colour so that you end up with these odd, unique tones.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to get the perfect result?
The Enduro race was filmed out of sequence, so we had to show the Pogues covered in beach sand, post-race, weeks prior. The sand in that part of North Carolina has a very specific colour and texture, too. In the end, a mixture of sawdust, glue and hairspray was the winning combo. We teamed up with many amazing artists, including Grey Scott, who joined us in season 4 – she's got an incredible eye for cool grunge, and worked on ageing, distressing, and dyeing clothing.

What are your favourite pieces in the Reclaimed Vintage | Outer Banks collection?
The Surfing Rots Your Brain tee – a beloved artist in Charleston, South Carolina, John Pundt, snapped this photo of an electrical box where the show is filmed, and I knew I wanted to incorporate that. My other favorite is the bandana! So many people reached out to me looking for *the* John B bandana and it's finally here!

We’re so excited to get our hands on the collection! The UK’s approaching winter – how would you style the collection for AW24?
Throw your favourite old jumper around your waist for easy layering when the cooler nights hit, or grab your best vintage coat to throw on top.

If you were stranded on an island, which three items would you have with you?
A fishing pole, a soft hoodie, and something to drink. I wouldn’t last long but I’d have a good time.
