Shorts for your shape
By Kasia Hastings, 2 June 2016
Summer’s hot, halcyon days offer every man the opportunity to free their long-suffering legs in a pair of shorts, but making the move can prove a tough task to tackle. Pinning down the right style, colour and length combination is key to nailing this essential part of your seasonal survival kit, so we’ve put together a handy guide to stop you falling short this summer.

Short shorts: best for short and athletic guys
The days when wearing shorts only really let your knees feel the breeze are well and truly over – this summer, a retro revival of smaller, sportier styles is in full swing. If you’re in possession of a pair of shorter pins then this style will elongate your legs. Or, if you’re a man with muscular legs, they’ll show off all your good gym work. A pair of these little guys will also allow you to make the most of your tanning time, but modesty is key here – if you’re going large on your pegs, it’s best to keep things fairly covered elsewhere, opting for a simple tee up top rather than a revealing vest. Skimpier shorts are a trickier challenge if you’re blessed with longer legs or a bigger body, so maybe consider…

Chinos: best for big and tall guys
Chinos are a pretty strong choice for most body types, but this smarter cut will benefit big and tall guys in particular. Whether you’re hitting the deck or the dancefloor, a structured style like this will keep things tailored and tidy. This doesn’t mean squeezing into the tightest pair you can get into, mind – your shorts should sit comfortably on your natural waist (two inches below your belly button) without a belt. Update this classic style by opting for an SS16 colour palette and avoid primary colours and large prints where possible.

Denim shorts: best for skinny guys
While jeans are a staple in every man’s wardrobe, denim shorts are a harder nut to crack. Dodgy DIY jobs and regrettable trends have left many men with cut-off jeans that don’t look, fit or feel right. This summer sees a new influx of ripped, customised and dyed denim that will suit slimmer frames best. For a cleaner take on the look, opt for a rolled-up style teamed with a tee and open shirt. Or go full grunge with a raw-hemmed or ripper pair and Converse.

Jersey shorts: best for athletic guys
On days where comfort is king, go jersey. Nailing the athleisure look will allow you to chill in style. This will work best if you’re sporting a muscular physique, but make sure you don’t look like you’re in gym mode. Smarten up your look by adding some stylish kicks, shades and a plain T-shirt, and avoiding logos or anything that reads ‘ready for a gym sesh’. These shorts come in longer lines so are best swerved by shorter guys.
