ADVERTORIAL

WHY THE ADIDAS TOKYO IS THE NEW IT-GIRL SHOE

A few years ago, we were all reaching for oversized trainers with exaggerated soles. Our mantra was: the bigger the better. And boy, did things get bigger. But the reign of a modern sneaker has had its day, and the low-profile, retro silhouettes of the 60s and 70s are stepping back onto roadsides and runways with a vengeance. One sneaker leading the pack? The adidas Tokyo. As slimline as a ballet flat with as much versatility as their bulkier brother the Samba, these 3-stripe staples are showing up on everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Kendall Jenner – and we can’t get enough. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know about the new it-girl shoe.

FIRST, A LITTLE HISTORY

Nostalgia has been the driving force behind some of adidas’ biggest silhouettes to date. From the pervasive Samba to the always classic Superstar, this iconic sportswear brand certainly backs its heritage. As our latest sneaker obsession, the Tokyo is no different – first produced as a track shoe at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, they become a popular ultra-low-profile leisure trainer in the following years. The Tokyo has recently been reissued with its familiar low-cut design and gum sole, now reinterpreted in various metallic and neon colourways. With a streamlined shape, it’s no wonder these understated sneakers are a mainstay in our wardrobes – pairing perfectly with everything from baggy jeans to summer dresses.

ALL-OUT NOSTALGIA

A new range of bold colourways makes it easier than ever to slot the Tokyo into your summer wardrobe – and we’re starting strong with this dusty blue pair. Doubling up with a baby tee and adidas tank, as well as two-tone socks, the look leans right into the retro vibes of this sneaker. But the balance of a brightly hued shoe and earthier outfit tones feels unexpectedly modern.

REALLY ROMANTIC

If you needed more proof that the Tokyo is the most versatile sneaker at your disposal, look no further. From retro sporty vibes to a feminine ‘fit, these understated trainers are the ultimate outfit companion. The pink and red colourway lends itself to a lightweight lace dress with a soft tone to balance the floaty fabric. Sheer knee-high socks make the look feel more casual than cottagecore, but you wouldn’t look out of place picking strawberries in a daisy-drenched field either. We’re headed straight for a summer of love, and these shoes are our heart's desire.
